The World's Top 40 Travel Destinations - Really?

I am left wondering how researchers at Travel + Leisure came up with the number of people visits for many of the travel destinations chosen for their top 40 list
since there are, to my knowledge. no entrance gates or other means to collect this statistical information. For example, we are informed that in 2010, 39.2 million people visited New York's Time Square, 22.5 million visited Niagara Falls, and 14 million people visited San Francisco's Pier 39.
I think that 19th century British Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli observation that "there are three kinds of lies, lies, damned lies and statistics," sums up my feelings on this matter. Besides the fact that when I took this photo in 2010 there were more sea lions than people at Pier 39.
