Social Media, Social Business, Social Era, What's the difference?

How often do we use words that we really do not have a clear understanding of there meaning?
Take for example the world "social." When I look in a dictionary it defines the word social (adj)
as;

1.pertaining to, devoted to, or characterized by friendly companionship or relations: a social club.
2. seeking or enjoying the companionship of others; friendly; sociable; gregarious.
3. of, pertaining to, connected with, or suited to polite or fashionable society: a social event.
4. living or disposed to live in companionship with others or in a community, rather than in isolation: People are social beings.
5. of or pertaining to human society, especially as a body divided into classes according to status: social rank."

When people talk about social in the context of the Internet we assume that everyone is referring to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and other similar web sites.

However as Nilofer Marchant points out in her recent Harvard Business Review article: "What we talk about when we talk about social," does not necessarily mean the same thing to everyone. It is therefore important to understand in what context we should be using this word.
