Boundary Park Block Watch Coordinator, Marjorie Homer Dixon received a telephone call from a resident living on Southpark Crescent reporting two mailboxes being broken into sometime late last night. According to Marjorie, "for some reason, Boundary Park is being targeted.

If you are coming home late at night or you live across from a Canada Post Super Mailbox, pay particular attention to anyone around the mailboxes at that later time. It seems that the individual boxes are easier and faster to break into with just a screwdriver rather than a larger instrument like a crow bar."

If you witness a crime in progress call 911

As many residents are aware, mail box theft in Boundary Park is on the increase. If thieves keep returning it is because they have discovered that there is either cash, government cheques, credit and bank cards readily available for the taking.

The most valuable item available to these thieves are peoples identities and financial records. If you are still receiving credit card, bank and utility (telephone, Hydro & gas) statements in the mail you are placing your identity and financial security at risk.

No doubt your parents taught you not to carry a lot of cash on your person and, if you did, not to flaunt it in public. Today, the same lesson holds true with the mail you elect to receive.

Instead of receiving your bank, credit card and utility statements in the mail, have them sent to you electronically, via the internet. If your credit card is soon to expire, have your new card delivered to your local bank branch for personal pick up.

In the meantime, get into the good practice of  picking up your mail on a daily basis, and if you plan to be away for a few days, arrange for a neighbour to pick up your mail.

If everyone followed these simple practices there would be no reason for thieves to break into our mail boxes as there would be nothing of value to steal.
