Students Favour Bricks & Mortar Learning

by Mike Coates

A recent survey of Canadian university students found the majority of students preferred taking courses in a traditional classroom (bricks and mortar) setting versus taking courses on-line.

As a marketing management instructor at BCIT's School of Business, I concur with the findings of this study.

The majority of students I have surveyed prefer the classroom environment. The question is why? It is my opinion that learning in a classroom setting demands sensory involvement which facilitates social interaction. And social interaction is where the real learning takes place.

On-line or e-learning has its place in post secondary education but, in my opinion, will never replace the traditional classroom learning experience.
